3.4 Artefact Evaluation/Monitoring

Week 6
Monday 1st November 2010

In the beginning of this lesson, me and my group had a quick meeting to summarise what we have done so far and what else needs to. The things we discussed about where the status of the questionnaires ( to collect data to help us make some important descisions when creating the initial design ideas), the initial ideas draft, which was given to do as homework over the half term holidays. the outcome of the meeting turned out to be ok as we all had our draft initial ideas. Also in this lesson we were told how to collect and present our data ( quantitative and qualitative) and i helped edit the questionnaire Omar created.

In lesson 2 we were given the task to create a group brainstorm about the conventions and ideas about what type of sculptures we can make. in this brainstorm we discussed topics like materials, messages, key words and ideas for our sculpture. the brainstorm really helped me get a clear view of what are the options available and how we can develop that into our sculpture. also i thought that everyone in the group contributed to their maximum effort and the whole task was easy and fun to do as everyone cooperated and came out with brilliant ideas and outcome. towards to the end of the lesson me and my group set out to create more questionnaires to obtain the best result possible. This task was a little bit tiring as some of us where running a little bit behind because of technical difficulties like printing etc

Week 8
Thursday 18th November 2010

Period 1

We had our minutes meeting as usual and we had a discussion of what we have done so far. One of the points we completed successfully is chosing our final design for our sculpture. we chose my design as the final design and made some alliterations to it. we decided on this design because it is easier to mak, conveys the message in a short and snappy way, it is conveys a powerful message in a clear vivid way with significant features. one of the things we had to focus on was to finish of the scale design for our sculpture. After we finished our meeting we began experimenting with all the recyclable material that our group had bought in. The purpose of this task is to experiment with the materials to see what good and bad and how we can improve from the negative feedback when it comes to making our actual mega sized sculpture.

For the first sculpture i used materials like coke can, plastic bottle, paper, cellotape and glue. I began my sculpture by cutting out the top end of a plastic water bottle and i placed it on top of a coke can. then i used scrap paper to create a paper ball for the head and strips of paper rolled together for the arms. to do this i pierced two holes of the sides of the coke can with a scissor. i also cut out pieces of scrap cardboard to represent buttons. Then i gave the whole figurine a cardboard base and i added details like the eyes, eyebrows on the face with a black marker

creating this sculpture was very interesting, exciting and new as you do not make art of waste everyday at home or at school. there were few flaws in the process of creating this sculpture as this was my first time doing something like this. Here are some of the problems i faced during the creation of this sculpture;

1.Could not pierce the holes in the coke can properly because of my injured arm. Becuase the coke can is made out of a very light material, the shape that i cut out did not exactly turn out to be a perfect circle. it deflected here and there making the hole looking uneven

2. The paper ball head kept falling off even after i put PVA glue, i realised this happened because i had put the glue on top of a PLASTIC cap which made it hard for the paper ball to sit properly

3. I got some glue on my hair and this has taught me next time to tie my hair up to prevent it from getting stuck to anyhting!

4. once i finished the sculpture, we were told NOT to use cellotape, masking tape when it came to making our actual sculpture because our sculpture should be made entirely of recyclable materials. Also in the actual sculpture i was told not to use paint or any markers to draw expressions ( the expressions need to be made out of materials - eg: cardboard eyes)

On the whole i really enjoyed doing this task as one of the things i really like is doing art and craft stuff. It was very interesting to see how we can make fun things out of stuff that we actually throw out because we asume it is usesless to us. The idea of making something out of waste, eg: "Art out of wast" is an exciting thing to do and it really gives the audience who is viewing it a different perspective of things!
